Australian Women @ War |
|
At the outbreak of WW1 if women weren't serving in the war as nurses they were expected to be at home managing children and family whilst dealing with their concerns for the future and misery of losing loved ones. Women were also fiercely encouraged to join voluntary organizations to help out their men and war effort. Some of these organizations included were the Country Women’s Association, Australian Women’s National League, Australian Red Cross, Australian Comforts Fund and Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Within these different organizations the women would meet and produce goods for the soldiers. Some examples were clothing, Christmas packages, billies, they would meet troop trains with travelling soldiers and deliver sandwiches and tea and bake cakes for local training camps and hospitals. Fundraisers were also organised by the women to buy supplies and necessities for the soldiers.
