Australian Women @ War |
|
WW1 affected many women in different ways as it did on the whole of Australia. The women who volunteered to help in war service were greatly affected as they had to witness many disturbing scenes and put others before themselves to save the wounded. Sister Hilda Loxton had to sit in a trench with 5 other nurses on the military grounds and keep a look out for wounded soldiers. Many other nurses like Sister Loxton had to perform very similar tasks this would make a very large impact on the Australian nurses as it could put them in a near death experience and also scar them for life from seeing such disturbing scenes. Women who stayed home also were greatly affected by the war they had to financially support themselves and their family, manage their children and deal with the unknown truth as to whether they would see their loved ones again. This would have affected the women greatly as most of them likely hadn’t worked before and haven’t had to financially support themselves and their children. Most of the woman wouldn’t know what it was like to work, look after a family and also deal with possibly losing a loved one presumably it would put a massive amount of pressure and stress on them.
